The Culture Bridge has partnered with Paris City Council of the 13th District to showcase Macao’s traditional culture through photography in Paris. Fifty award winning photographs of traditional celebrations displayed Macao's Chinese, Macanese and Portuguese cultural heritage. The exhibition was very well attended by residents of Paris. We were also honoured to greet French politicians: Buon Tan, Jean-Marie le Guen and Jérôme Coumet, and the Chinese ambassador to France, Zhai Jun. We are grateful for financial support from the Macao Government Tourist Office for the project.
The Concert: Love of Silk Strings was held on the 26th February in the City Hall of the 13th District and was very well attended by an extremely enthusiastic audience of over 500 people. Nine young musicians from Macao brought the Parisian audience an evening of 13 pieces of primarily traditional Chinese guzheng music, but also accompanied by erhu, piano, cello and flute. The players were ultimately rewarded with a standing ovation, many members of the audience asking at the end of the performance whether there would be another concert .
The two week long workshops were run by two professional musicians and workshop leaders from Scotland's Dancing Feet Ceilidh Band. The integration of learning about the geography, history, literature and culture of Scotland helped deepen the students’ understanding and appreciation of Scottish music and dance. It also helped enrich the students' cultural and artistic educational experience and to broaden their international perspective in a fun and enjoyable way. The project culminated in two wonderful performances, including parent-child participation with great enthusiasm.
The Culture Bridge's Silk and Kilt project (reported by Teledifusão de Macau) was to bring musicians of different cultures together to share, understand and appreciate each other's music.
The project concluded with an evening of musical dialogue which took place at Creative Macau. Musicians of Scottish and traditional Chinese music played music from their respective repertoires. They also ventured into several creative collaborations, with three improvised pieces having Chinese and Scottish features.
As part of our aim of introducing and deepening cultural exchange, we partnered with Paris City Council of the 13th District to run an a Chinese music workshop for 80 Parisian school pupils. This included: 1) a demonstration of two Chinese musical pieces played on the guzheng; 2) a demonstration of six French children’s songs played on the guzheng; 3) the children then sang along with the music; 4) a brief explanation of the instrument and its history; 5) the children were divided into groups and had the opportunity to try out playing a simple song on the guzheng themselves, which all enthusiastically attempted.
